Registering a Death When someone dies, there are many arrangements to make. Firstly,
you must register the death of your loved one. Although understandably
difficult, this is quite a simple process.
This month’s blog at C R Low Funeral Directors
offers a guide to registering a death in Scotland. For information, call us in
Selkirk on 01750 21259 .
Who Can Register the Death? A close relative or partner normally registers the death.
However, an executor, someone who was present at the death or the occupier of
the property of where the person died can also register it.
If there is no such person, any other individual in
possession of the information required can register the death. Deaths in
Scotland may be registered at any registrar in Scotland.
Registering a death is free. However, you will need to pay
for any copies of the death certificate you order. These are £10 each in
Scotland.
What Do You Need? When preparing to register a death, you will need the MCCD
(Medical Certificate of Cause of Death) from the doctor. It is also helpful to
have the following:
Any certificate/document relating to any pension,
benefits or allowances NHS medical card (if available) Birth and marriage certificates
In addition to this, you will need to inform the registrar
of the full name, occupation and postal address of the deceased, alongside
their date and country of birth. If they were married, you should inform the
registrar of their spouse’s full name and occupation. You must also provide the
name of their parents.
What Does the Registrar Give You? Once you have registered the death, you will be given an
abbreviated death certificate and Form 14. This should be taken to your chosen
funeral director so they can apply for burial or cremation.
You will also be given a green Social Security or
notification of death certificate (Form 334/S1). This is required if the
individual received a state pension or social security benefit.
To add to this, the registrar will also provide an
abbreviated extract of the death. This may be required by some insurance
companies and banks.
